SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITY

The State Tested Nursing Hospice Aide (STNA) provides personal care services and promotes comfort to terminally ill patients under the direction of the Case Manager or other Registered Nurse. The STNA Hospice Aide will be assigned in a manner that promotes quality, continuity and safety of patients care.

Essential Functions

  1. Provide personal care to the patient in a compassionate and understanding manner consistent with the hospice philosophy.
  2. Under the written and/or verbal direction of the RN Case Manager, the STNA performs the following duties:
  3. Provide bed bath, shower, or tub bath as appropriate
  4. Provides skin care, oral hygiene, and hair washing as assigned by the RN Case Manager
  5. Provide good body alignment, positioning, and range of motion exercises for non-ambulatory patients
  6. Assist patient in and out of bed and with ambulation (including gait belt, sliding board, Hoyer Lift, E-Z Stand) with family or facility staff assistance as indicated.
  7. Assist patient with use of bedpan, urinal, commode and bathroom
  8. Assist with feeding and dressing patients
  9. Monitor and record temperature, pulse, respirations and blood pressure, as directed by RN
  10. Change simple dressings
  11. Perform housekeeping to maintain cleanliness of the home or facility
  12. Assist with routine catheter care and enemas according to plan of care.
  13. Responsible for meal preparation and cleanliness of the kitchen area.
  14. Attend patient care conferences as requested by the RN.
  15. Support and instruct the patient, family, and caregiver.
  16. Maintain the dignity of the dying patient.
  17. Support the patient and family member’s unique spiritual and cultural beliefs.
  18. Consult and collaborate with the interdisciplinary team and others involved in the patients care.
  19. Report significant changes in the patient’s condition to the RN immediately.
  20. Service is expected to be documented during, or by close of business day in order to maintain an accurate medical record.
  21. Ensures that equipment, supplies, and other necessary items and services are available to the patient.
  22. Adhere to all Midwest policies and procedures.
  23. Maintain absolute confidentiality of all information pertaining to patients, families, and staff and adhere to all HIPAA rules.
  24. Display a positive and professional image and attitude in all relationships with patients, families, peers and in the community.
  25. Demonstrate ongoing responsibility for self-education.
  26. Maintains patient and personal safety regarding occupational health and safety.
  27. Participate in the Quality Assessment Performance Improvement Program (QA/PI), as requested.
  28. Attends interdisciplinary group/team meetings as assigned.
  29. Participates in the on-call rotation as assigned by the RN Case Manager and defined by the on-call policy.
